On the 15th July, world champion surfer Kelly Slater launched his own menswear brand, Outerknown. The designs feature wardrobe essentials that combine function and with streetwear aesthetic, while incorporating eco-friendly manufacturing processes.
By partnering with Italian manufacturer Aquafil, Slater has managed to use their high quality ECONYL fibres, developed from 100% regenerated nylon materials, including fishing nets, in his bid to preserve the ocean’s ecosystem. Slater has also made an incentive by giving fishermen the chance to donate their worn fishing nets to reduce marine waste.
“Outerknown represents a clean slate – an opportunity to create modern coastal clothingwe want to wear with a manufacturing process we believe in. We are surfers that grew up & we want to wear smart & stylish clothing that compliments our nomadic lifestyle. It’s not easy to build cool & luxurious clothing in a sustainable way, but it’s the only way to do business moving forward.”
The Autumn 2015 collection is centered around the theme of coastal classics and is available at select premium retailers worldwide, including Selfridges, Mr Porter and Ron Herman.
