Natalie Dean and Heather Whittle, founders of vegan shoe brand Beyond Skin have won this Year’s Observer Ethical Awards for their achievements in ethical fashion. Known for selling stylish, cruelty free footwear, all shoes are 100% vegan and made within the UK – stocked in a number of different London stores. Over the years, their shoes have been worn by famous vegan Natalie Portman and more recently, Olga Kurlyenko as part of the Red Carpet Green Dress initiative at last year’s Oscars.
They’ve had to overcome obstacles such as factories closing down, having to scrape to afford eco friendly materials, and suppliers shutting down, but somehow the design duo have made it work. Now the brand has its own diffusion line, established this year and there are plans to expand the business to cater for menswear.
The Observer Ethical Awards celebrates all aspects of ethical business, from food to fashion to entrepreneurs trying to push for positive change.
