Glasgow Caledonian University graduate, Sam Whitten, has taken green design to new levels, with Hemp Eyewear – currently a kikstarter project selling recyclable and biodegradable sunglasses sourced from hemp plant and flax fibres.
Researching cool new ways to use renewable materials, Sam began his project after discovering that hemp is one of the most sustainable and useful sources out there.
Made by hand in the UK, Hemp eyewear uses compression moulding processes to create the frame and form it into a lightweight, naturally textured design – each pair with its own unique, organic detailing.
From the packaging, to the earth-friendly waterproof resin coating, and lenses made from bio materials, all aspects of the brand’s design is 100% natural and sustainable is some way. Combine that with their striking understated image and it’s no wonder why Whitten was listed as one of the top 5 designers at the Design Centre’s New Designers Exhibition 2014.
The way we view hemp is changing, and Whitten’s vision has proved it’s not just for the barefoot hippie crowd it was once associated with.
