Last week Stella McCartney cut ties with Argentinian wool supplier Ovis 21, following a PETA investigation on the harsh treatment of its sheep. Patagonia has now followed suit and will be sourcing their wool elsewhere, in order to maintain their high ethical standards.
Patagonia’s CEO Rose Marcario stated in a blog on Monday;
“We’ve spent the past several days looking deep into our wool supply chain, shocked by the disturbing footage of animal cruelty that came to light last week.”
After studying the PETA investigation in depth, which shows lambs being held down while their throats are slit, Marcario went on to conclude;
“ It is impossible to ensure immediate changes to objectionable practices on Ovis 21 ranches, & we have therefore made the decision that we will no longer buy wool from them. This is a difficult decision, but it’s the right thing to do.”
The outdoor clothing brand will be looking elsewhere for their supply chain until more ethical practices are put in place.
