Glasgow school of art grad Kelly Dawn Riot is founder of new print focussed ethical menswear label, Formication.
Taking inspiration from naturalist illustrators, Kelly’s designs make quite the statement – but not just visually. With her collection being sponsored by love Your Clothes, sustainability is at the forefront of the Scottish talent’s latest designs.
In 2014 she won the Scotland Re:Designed New Talent of The year award, receiving mentoring from ethical fashion advocate Orsela De Castro as part of her prize, as well as help from Zero Waste Scotland to create a collection from fabric remnants from local Scottish mills.
The exotic prints in this collection are engineered and artisanal, featuring anumber of wildlife visuals, from trails of insects, to tropical birds and botanical illustrations. Lightweight natural fabrics such as cottons are also sourced in this summer collection, while Kelly uses eco-friendly printing techniques to keep the designs as sustainable as possible.
Kelly told Love Your Clothes;
“It’s not about taking on the world, it’s about doing your own thing but being conscious of its impact & taking measures to reduce your impact while retaining the integrity of your work.”
