Sustainable Spotlight: Studio 189

STUDIO 189 SS16 2Flying the flag for sustainable african fashion after having made quite the impact at NYFW SS16, is upcoming label Studio 189 and their artisanal collection ‘Fashion Rising’. Founded by actress Rosario Dawson and Abrima Erwiah, the US based company is a social enterprise that provides a platform for creatives in need of support and tools to further their careers.

Studio 189 Scarf“To use Fashion as an agent for Social Change, turning challenges on the ground into opportunities.”

Inspired by the rich traditions and techniques used in african design, and a V-Day trip through Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda and Bakavu in 2011, Rosario and Abrima came up with the idea for Fashion Rising and the concept of providing opportunities to empower and educate ambitious individuals living in poverty.

Established in 2013, the designs which are for both men and women, are vibrant and full of pattern and print, such as the hand batik styles and glassblowing on organic cotton. What ATTYRE loves about this label is it’s character, from batik bow ties to hand painted scarves, there’s no item that doesn’t make a statement, instantly uplift an outfit, or remind you of the beauty of African culture.
