Sustainable Spotlight: The Basket Room

Sustainable Spotlight: The Basket Room

13277758_600829133419322_1271377074_nFounded by designers Camilla and Holly, The Basket Room is a London based company that works with small craft collectives in Africa, connecting talented weavers with a wider market. The women behind the designs come from small farming villages that rely on alternative incomes to get through poor crop seasons.

Recently The Basket Room has collaborated with established british fashion label Jigsaw, for a summer collection that combines the best of beauty and ethics.

Jigsaw picked out their patterns, colours, styles and trims, while 100 skilled weavers spun the baskets using traditional techniques and a special sisal material, sourced locally.

The team up gives local artisans in Kenya a platform and recognition for their work, who pride themselves on keeping alive East African traditions that have been passed down for many generations. It also provides them with extra income to support their educational needs.

Jigsaw accessories designer Hannah Harrison said of the collection:

“We wanted to keep both the design of the tote & the clutch simple. For the tote, we added leather handles & whipstitch detail to ensure that it’s as hardwearing as possible & for the clutch, we added a contemporary twist to an otherwise vintage design with a leather flap.”
