Travel For London (TFL), will be introducing fairtrade cotton to use for staff uniforms, as part of a five year partnership with the Fairtrade Foundation. The move will give fairtrade farmers a platform to widen their work opportunities, as TFL becomes the first public sector company to source cotton from Fairtrade’s new cotton sourcing programme.
TFL placed their first order of 100,000 items in 2015, which some of the staff are already wearing. Commercial Director of Fairtrade foundation, Euan Venters, stated:
“Farmers constantly tell us they are keen to sell more of their crops on Fairtrade terms, so this is great way to celebrate the close of Fairtrade Fortnight 2016.”
Cotton farming is a difficult industry, where it can be hard to live a sustainable livelihood. TFL is the first organisation in the public sector to join the Ethical Trading Initiative, which protects worker’s rights on a global level. Here’s hoping this new fairtrade business move will set a precedent for other public sector companies to do the same.
