Cape Town’s The Street Store is the first of its kind, catering to homeless customers only. Designed to work on a rent-free basis, a person in need can peruse the railings of donated clothing, with the assistance and guidance of local volunteers.
The initiative is as a collaboration between a cape town ad agency and a local homeless shelter, in order to address the issue of the recent rise in people living on the streets due to unemployment and drug addiction.
‘Hang up, help out’ is their slogan, as handmade cardboard hangers holding items of clothing are attached to pavement railings. The first pop-up shop saw a turn up of over 1,000 homeless customers, while hundreds of donated stock ensured shoppers were left more than satisfied.
Working with the local council, the Street Store can set up shop in poor areas all around Cape Town, giving every person in need an equal chance to get their hands on a collection of clean, new clothes.
